It was a very sorry day when I had to move house and leave my studio behind but a studio, or dedicated workspace for my computer, books and manuscripts is an absolute must now. Writing can consume you!
So that I can leave with a clear conscience I plan a week ahead. I’m pretty disciplined when it comes to obeying my planning and don’t let myself off the hook until I’ve completed all that I set out to do. This will include:
- Listing the chapters that I want to have finished by the end of the week.
- Organising notes and thoughts on new work – or picture books.

- Reading research material and making notes and time lines.
- Editing – working up sheets to make sure that my books are consistent and the character’s names are all spelt the same way and unpicking the story that I’ve written.
- Checking out workshops and presentations and making sure that all the equipment I need is in the right place.
- Answering letters, emails and phone calls about new work and work that is underway.
- Involving myself in the ‘business’ of writing (sorting receipts, organizing tax and erky stuff).
